Linux Phone Standards Forum Releases First Specification
Although Google's Android is the media darling, it's not the only mobile Linux option out there. The point was reinforced yesterday with the release of the first specification from the Linux Phone Standards Forum.
The LPSF has been working on its specification since its founding in 2005, and released the first portion this past July. The goal of the forum is to produce a specification that can then be utilized by developers to create applications that can be utilized by any complete "phone stack" based on the forum's standard. This contrasts with projects like Google Android, which focuses on building a specific phone stack rather than a wider specification.
LPSF plans to release real-world-based updates to the specification in the coming months, and anticipates multiple implementations of their specification, potentially in the near future.
