Netgear Routes Open Source to the Router
In what is being called the first out-of-the-box Open Source router, Netgear yesterday announced the immediate availability of the WFR614L Router, complete with an entirely Open Source firmware package.
The device, which includes a fairly basic feature set, is being hailed as the first to provide native Open Source firmware, though other offerings, including those from Vyatta and XORP, have their own claims to the title of first in Open Source routing. Along with the launch of the router, which is available for $69 from a limited number of outlets, Netgear has debuted a new website aimed at coordinating projects for the WGR614L. The router is also capable of running DD-WRT and Tomato, and Netgear plans to offer OpenWRT support in the near future.
