Netscape Finally Says Goodbye
on December 31, 2007
The Netscape web browser, which revolutionized internet browsing in the mid-90's, has finally succumbed in its long march towards an inevitable demise.
The decision comes after almost sixteen years of active development on the browser, and long after Mozilla Firefox seized the spotlight Netscape once held as Internet Explorer's main rival. AOL cited the browser's declining user base, as well as the success of the Firefox project, as reasons to discontinue the Netscape series. The company will discontinue all support for the browser as of February 1st, 2008.
In the place of Netscape, AOL is encouraging users to adopt Firefox, describing it as a "critically-acclaimed product."
