Oregon Uni Sticks It To The RIAA
The Recording Industry Association of America has hit a bump in their quest to browbeat file-sharing students and it's coming from of the University of Oregon.
Seventeen University of Oregon students have been sued by the RIAA over alleged file-sharing after the RIAA traced them back to the University's computer system. The university alleges that the company responsible for the tracing is unlicensed in Oregon, and that the "investigations" may be accessing more than just the student's IP addresses.
The Oregon Attorney General is backing up the university with an investigation into the RIAA's activities, the first such challenge to the RIAA's campaign against file-sharing. Coupled with recent reports that some major music labels are ready to cut the association's funding, Oregon's challenge may just spell the end to the RIAA's war against users.
